Conference Brochure (French, English)
For detailed information about the conference, check: www.ingenieurs-polytech.org

This conference,
the first in Sub-Sahara Africa, will explore how the engineering profession can implement sustainable projects to meet the UN Millennium Development Goals through capacity building in rural communities in Africa. Unlike other conferences, this conference will focus on problems specific to communities in Africa and how African indigenous systemic solutions can be developed through long-term and effective partnerships with in-country and external stakeholders.

Issues of interest in this conference include: water and sanitation, health, energy, shelter, information and telecommunication technology, business development, education, and community development. Women and gender issues will be incorporated throughout the program. It is clear that efficient and cost-effective delivery of basic necessities to disadvantaged communities in Africa can break cycles of poverty, open doors to better health, provide education to men and women, and create opportunities for employment.

Conference Objectives

  • Address problems faced by disadvantaged communities in Africa, especially in rural areas.
  • Develop a broad range of holistic and systemic solutions to African community problems.
  • Provide an opportunity for the conference participants to become acquainted with problems faced by communities near Yaoundé.
  • Explore collaborations, exchanges of students and engineers among African countries
  • Explore collaborations for building a network of replicable “green village” models across regions in Africa.
  • Develop programs for young engineers and women to become more involved in village capacity building.

Conference Program

A combination of keynote lectures, technical sessions, workshops, a poster session, and two village site visits. The program should be of interest to engineers, representatives of various institutions, NGOs and communities, development workers, and volunteers. An expo and exhibit area will be open during the entire conference.

Two village site visits are planned on June 5 and 6 for hands-on capacity building and to allow participants to become better acquainted with village issues.

Topical Workshops (June 7 in the afternoon)

Creating and managing micro-enterprises from A-Z; Sustainable community planning and development; and Health issues.

UN Millennium Goals Workshop (June 8)

Meeting the UN Millennium Goals in Africa: role of engineers in capacity building, case studies and hands-on capacity building, developing an action plan.

Call for Proposals

We are seeking proposals for presentations at the conference. About 40 of them will be selected for oral presentations. All others will be presented during the poster session on June 6.

All proposals must be submitted in writing (250 words maximum), preferably electronically, and must include a title, affiliation, and 3-5 paragraphs. The proposals must address one or several of the following themes: water and sanitation, health, energy, shelter, information and telecommunication technology, business development, education, women issues, community development, or capacity building. Proposals for presentation at the conference are due no later than April 5, 2006 and should be addressed electronically to the following three persons: Prof. Bernard Amadei (amadei@colorado.edu);  Raymond Tachago (association@ingenieurs-polytech.org); and Prof. Tamo Tatietse (Thom2t@yahoo.fr)
